Times tables test: 20 sums from the 2 to 12 tables (free)

Twenty sums from the 2 to 12 times tables, such as 7 × 8 and 6 × 9. Type your answers, press the check button and you see how many you got right, with the correct answer next to every sum you missed.

How this times tables test works

The twenty sums are the same every time you open the page. That is on purpose: when the list stays fixed, you can come back next week and compare your result with today's. Every table from 2 to 12 appears at least once, and the sums that people most often get wrong, such as 7 × 8, 6 × 9 and 12 × 12, are spread through the list instead of bunched at the end.

There is no timer. Type an answer next to each sum, leave a field empty if you do not know it, and press the check button when you are done. An empty field counts as a miss. After checking you see your total out of twenty and the correct answer next to every sum you got wrong, so you know exactly which ones to look at again.

What to do with a sum you missed

Most mistakes cluster in a handful of facts. For the nine table, the digits of the answer add up to nine: 9 × 7 is 63, and 6 + 3 is 9. For the eleven table up to 9 × 11, repeat the digit, so 11 × 6 is 66. For 6 × 7 and 7 × 8, say the whole sum out loud a few times, the way you learned a phone number. A fact you can only reach by counting up is the one to practise.

Pick the two or three sums you missed and write each on a card with the answer on the back. Go through the cards for a minute a day, and take the test again after a few days. Because the list is fixed, a better result next time means you now know those facts, and it does not depend on a lucky draw of easier sums.

What this test is, and what it is not

It is a quick check of whether you know your times tables by heart. It is not a measure of how good you are at maths, and a few misses say nothing about that. We give you a count out of twenty and no comparison with other people, because there is nothing behind such a comparison yet.

Frequently asked questions

Which tables are in this times tables test?
The tables of 2 to 12. Every table from 2 to 12 appears at least once in the twenty sums, and the harder facts such as 7 × 8 and 6 × 9 are included.
Is there a time limit?
No. You fill in the twenty answers at your own pace and check them at the end. If you want to practise speed, take a minute with a timer of your own and see how many you can answer before it runs out.
Is my result saved?
No. The answers you type stay on this page and are gone when you close it. We do not ask for an account or an email address, and we do not count your score.
